Safety Tips to Prevent Dryer Fires in the Home

There is a hidden danger lurking within nearly every Canadian home and it’s in your dryer vent.

As time goes by, tiny bits of lint that have managed to avoid your dryer’s filter accumulate inside the exhaust vent, gradually increasing until it blocks the free flow of air. This can cause an excessive buildup of heat and result in a fire in some dryers. Don’t think it can’t happen to you! The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that more than 15,000 dryer fires occur each year, costing homeowners as much as 97 million dollars in property loss and damage.

The majority of fires in clothes dryers can be attributed to failure to properly clean the dryer components. Follow these steps to prevent it happening in your home:

  • Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional technician.
  • Never run the dryer without a lint filter.
  • Clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry, removing any lint that has collected around the drum.
  • Clean the vent pipe at least once per year (or longer if you notice that dry time has increased) or have it done by a professional.
  • Ensure proper airflow and drying time by using rigid or flexible metal venting material.
  • Clean the vent pipe at least once per year (or longer if you notice that dry time has increased) or have it done by a professional.
  • Ensure that the correct plug and outlet are used and that your dryer is properly connected.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions regarding load capacity.
  • Do not overload your dryer.
  • Turn off the dryer if you are leaving home or going to bed.
